Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts zwei neue Palais in unmittelbarer Nähe der bestehenden Hofburg: die Stallburg und die Amalienburg. In the second half of the 16th century, when the extensions made to the Swiss Wing were no longer adequate to their needs, Ferdinand I and his son Maximilian II built two new palaces in the immediate vicinity of the Hofburg: the Stallburg and the Amalienburg. The Stallburg (Imperial Stables), which has one of Vienna’s finest arcaded courtyards, was originally planned as a residence for Maximilian II by Ferdinand I. But in the 1560s the building came to be used for stabling. Over the centuries the building has had many famous residents and visitors, inclu- ding the Empress Elisabeth, the last Austrian Emperor Karl I and, during the Congress of Vienna, the Tsar Alexander I. Some of the rooms are now open to the public as part of a tour of the Imperial Apartments; others are used by the Federal Chancellery.
